Step 1 – Identify the hazards


What is a hazard?

A hazard is anything that can cause harm. In a childcare setting, a hazard could be:

  • a substance (such as sand, playdough, cleaning spray etc.)
  • food
  • toys and equipment
  • security of entry and exit points
  • medication
  • unattended children

  • NOTE: There are a large number of everyday things that may appear harmless or go unnoticed but could be dangerous if not recognised.
